Germany: Wine Seminar by Chie Sakata, Head Winemaker at Weingut Bernhard Koch
Hello! This is RYOTA, a staff member at LA GALERIE.
Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a wine seminar by Ms. Chie Sakata, the head winemaker at Weingut Bernhard Koch, located in Heinrichsdorf, Southern Palatinate, Germany. The seminar was conducted with a live connection to the winery, where Ms. Sakata shared insights into the winemaking process at Bernhard Koch and the current state of the wine region.
The Palatinate region is the warmest wine region in Germany, blessed with fertile soil and flat terrains suitable for cultivation. Due to these conditions, a variety of grape varieties thrive. At Bernhard Koch, the aim is to have at least one wine that suits every customer’s taste, offering a selection of around 70 to 80 different items. I was amazed by the extensive range! All these wines are crafted using only a single grape variety, reflecting the winery’s philosophy of expressing terroir and the unique character of each wine. Originally focused on serving the local community, Bernhard Koch has expanded its exports, with approximately 20% of the total production now reaching international markets.
During the tasting, the Riesling stood out with its beautifully defined acidity. The Chardonnay exhibited aromas of melon and apricot, with a clear and substantial fruity character that makes it a versatile wine for various meals. As for the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), it surprised me with a concentrated fruitiness that went beyond the fresh scent of red fruits.
The ongoing topic of global warming significantly influences grape cultivation and winemaking in Germany. While the challenges are increasing for cultivating Riesling, a grape that prefers cooler climates, black grape varieties, especially Pinot Noir, are thriving. Bernhard Koch has been proactive in adapting to these changes, experimenting with planting various grape varieties to prepare for the future.
When asked about the optimal drinking time for Bernhard Koch’s wines, Ms. Sakata mentioned that all the wines are ready to be enjoyed “now.” Focusing less on aging potential, the winery prioritizes crafting wines that are delicious and ready to drink immediately. This approach reflects the history of winemaking at Bernhard Koch, where the emphasis has always been on producing wines for the local community.
We are proud to offer Bernhard Koch’s wines at LA GALERIE. While enjoying the wines, please consider the history and dedication of winemaker Chie Sakata, who is contributing to the winemaking legacy in Germany. Explore the distinct characters of each wine from Bernhard Koch!
