Hello, I’m AKI, the shop manager at LA GALERIE.
When you think of California’s Napa Valley, it’s famous as a renowned wine-producing region. I had the chance to visit there almost a decade ago, and it was an exciting area with wineries lining both sides of the highway, making it a truly wonderful place.
Recently, I had the privilege to participate in the global release master seminar of the 2021 vintage from Schrader Cellars, often referred to as the “ultra-premium” winery of Napa Valley.
General Manager Jason Smith came to Japan and provided an introduction to Schrader Cellars and conducted a wine tasting of their 2021 vintage wines.
We tasted a total of six wines from Schrader’s two brands, Shrader and Double Diamond.
Schrader Cellars has vineyards in the Oakville region, located in the heart of Napa Valley, an area known for producing many high-end wines. In particular, their To Kalon wine is famous, often considered Napa’s Grand Cru, and it boasts exceptional ratings and prices.
To Kalon is a historic vineyard dating back to 1868, and its grapes are used in many prestigious Napa Valley wines, including Opus One. Even within the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety, there are various clones (varieties), and the choice of clone significantly influences the flavor.
When you study wine, you start by learning about grapes and regions, but this master class delved into the specific characteristics of these clones, making it a truly valuable opportunity for me.
One clone that left a lasting impression was the Heritage Clone, which produces very small clusters, about two-thirds the size of your palm. It’s grown in low-yield, special plots and results in Cabernet Sauvignon wine that is highly concentrated, well-balanced with acidity, and has a slightly chocolatey, sweet fragrance. It’s an enticing wine.
Jason emphasized the recovery from the 2020 wildfire disaster, and the 2021 vintage is infused with that resilient spirit.
Having the opportunity to hear directly from the producers adds an extra layer of depth to your appreciation for wine.
